| Remarks | Although Basque is a minority language our school is located in an area where 90% of the population are native speakers of Basque. There is influence of Spanish but it is not so great as to present a problem. Most pupils come from Basque speaking families. However, in our area most families speak a dialect of Basque and we teach the standard Basque which is what institutions accept as official. This, sometimes is a problem for students and parents. |

| Remarks | Although Basque is compulsory for our students , their level of proficiency in this language is not very good on average. Besides, they tend to use the minority language only for academic purposes and use Spanish for informal communication. We have just started a project called "Minority Languages in Europe" and are exchanging letters with an Italian school in Croatia, a Sardinian school and a Kurdish one. |

Basque is the teaching language. We start with Spanish at the age of 8 years, and we teach it as a subject. English is taught since the age of 4 (4 hours a week), and when the students are 14, they start also studying social sciences in English. French is not compulsory: the students start with it when they are 12, with 2 hours per week.
We would be interested in knowing, in having exchanges, with other schools, with students of 16-17 (multiculturalism, languages, identity...) |

| Remarks |
Projects, as well as materials, come from the network of Basque schools.
Spanish is the majority language, so speaking Basque is not fashionable for our students. Therefore we have to make them aware of the importance of supporting and using Basque, so that our language and culture will survive. |

| Main problem regarding minority language education: | You have to organize your exchanges among the schools of your community if you want to develop the Basque language. |
| Possible solutions: | To contact schools of different countries but having English as the communicative language . This is what we do, in that way our students learn English and therefore they share the minority language of each country. They are getting in contact with three languages at the same time. |
| Remarks |
Most of the projects developed in our school are concerned to English and Basque. We are part of the Comenius projects and of the European projects that we develop every year. Apart of these ones, the Basque department carries out different exchange projects among some Basque Schools of different provinces.
We have different topics but the ones we develop most are: 1) History, Geography and Language 2) Sports 3) Gastronomy 4) Folklore. music and dances 5) Feasts Sometimes we change one of them by the topic of art, it depends on the needs and desires of the other school of the exchange. Although we have as minority language the Basque language we are interested in exchanges with English as communicative language. |
